The Cameroon Weltwärts Network (CWN) is a youth-led development association made up of 26 Cameroonian returnees who previously participated in the German “Weltwärts” volunteer exchange programme under the South-North component. Through this international volunteer programme, young Cameroonians had the opportunity to serve in Germany, gain intercultural experience, participate in community development initiatives, and acquire practical knowledge and skills in areas such as social responsibility, environmental sustainability, leadership, education, and civic engagement. Upon their return to Cameroon, members formed the network as a platform to continue contributing positively to their communities using the knowledge, experience, and expertise gained during their volunteer service abroad. CWN was established with the vision of promoting sustainable development, youth empowerment, volunteerism, and community transformation in Cameroon. We are called from service to impact
Project story
Environmental degradation, deforestation, and climate change continue to pose serious environmental and socio-economic challenges in Cameroon, particularly in rapidly growing urban and semi-urban communities such as Kumba. Over the years, increasing population growth, urban expansion, unsustainable farming methods, uncontrolled waste disposal, bush burning, and excessive cutting of trees for fuel wood and construction have significantly reduced green spaces within the municipality and its surrounding communities. These activities have weakened the natural environment and contributed to the growing effects of climate change at the local level
In the context of Kumba, a tree planting project is particularly important because many public spaces, schools, roadsides, markets, and residential areas lack adequate greenery. Reforestation and urban greening efforts can significantly improve the appearance and environmental health of the municipality while contributing to national and global efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation. Such initiatives also align with Cameroon’s broader environmental sustainability goals and international commitments toward climate action and sustainable development.
This project therefore seeks to contribute to environmental protection and regeneration in Kumba through organized tree planting activities, community sensitization, and the promotion of sustainable environmental practices. By increasing tree cover and encouraging active community participation, the project aims to create a healthier greener, restore green spaces improve air quality, promote environmental awareness among community members and more climate-resilient environment for present and future generations.
