Project story
Boruca Ancestral Reforestation Project
Our Story
For over 40 years, Ulises Lázaro Morales has been a dedicated craftsman and cultural steward in the Boruca indigenous territory. Seven years ago, he expanded his farm to include cultural and ecological activities, witnessing firsthand how his community was losing its spiritual connection to nature. Inspired by the elders who once shared ancestral knowledge with him, Ulises envisioned creating a cultural center where his people could reconnect with their heritage and the land.
Decades of deforestation have stripped the surrounding forest. Now, Ulises is launching Boruca Ancestral Reforestation—a transformative project to restore five hectares of ancestral land.
Our Mission
We will reforest degraded territory with native, endemic, fruit, and medicinal species while educating and employing the wider Boruca community. Through hands-on workshops and fair wages, community members will learn about beneficial tree species, agroforestry, traditional medicine, and reforestation's environmental impact.
Our Vision
By establishing a nursery and cultivating 16,700 native trees, we'll restore ecological balance while preserving cultural practices. The project creates sustainable employment, diversifies local agriculture, and ensures future generations inherit both a thriving forest and their ancestral wisdom. Together, we're rebuilding the harmony between the Boruca people and nature.
