Ardha Jabesa Foundation (AJF) is a Non-Governmental Organization transforming lives in Northern Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) through integrated programs in Climate Change Adaptation, Resilience & Disaster Risk Reduction, Sustainable Rangeland Management & Ecosystem Restoration, Community Land Governance & Secure Customary Tenure, Sustainable Pastoralist Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment, Youth, Women, Gender & Civic Inclusion in Environmental Governance, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Peacebuilding & Intergenerational Transfer and Research, Policy Advocacy, Capacity Building & Institutional Strengthening. Since beginning operations in 2017 and achieving formal NGO registration in 2021 established under Non-Governmental Organizations Co-ordination Act (Cap 19) of 1990, we have emerged as a trusted bridge between marginalized pastoralist communities and development opportunities. Working across five ASAL counties; Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Wajir, and Tana River.

Project story

In partnership with the UNCCD G20 Global Land Initiative (G20 GLI), AJF successfully implemented a Community-Led Land Restoration Project in Bute Ward, Wajir County. This initiative directly aligns with the G20 GLI’s global ambition to prevent, halt and reverse land degradation, aiming to reduce degraded land by 50% by 2040.

Key Achievements (completed over six months):

1.      Restored approximately 78,000 hectares of degraded rangelands.

  1. Employed community-led approaches such as indigenous reseeding, sustainable grazing management, water harvesting and rangeland rehabilitation.

  2. Empowered local pastoralist communities with training in sustainable land management.

  3. Delivered measurable healing to the land while strengthening community resilience against desertification and climate change.

This project highlights the power of indigenous knowledge + community stewardship in large-scale restoration. It serves as a model for integrating traditional pastoralist practices with modern restoration techniques, contributing to global goals under the UNCCD and the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026).Join us in healing the land and empowering its people. Together, we can turn degraded rangelands into thriving ecosystems that sustain generations of pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya.
