Project story
The Bangladesh Environment and Development Society has been involved in mangrove restoration and conservation initiatives since 2013, restoring 200 hectares through ensuring the participation of the local people, coastal environmental education and promoting mangrove-based livelihoods.
Previously abundant, mangroves in the Sundarbans periphery have faced severe decline due to climate change and human activities such as embankment construction and agricultural expansion, especially shrimp cultivation and firewood collection, which disrupt the regeneration process. The loss of mangroves has left coastal areas vulnerable to tropical cyclones, leading to significant damage and loss of life. BEDS aims to restore mangroves by collaborating with coastal communities, focusing on creating a buffer zone to enhance coastal protection and provide alternative livelihoods. Efforts include planting mangrove and encouraging local nursery development and market chains for selling the products and seedlings.
The proposed project’s goal is to protect communities from the natural disasters and increase the mangrove coverage for climate adaptation and mitigation. Through the project, BEDS plan to restore an additional 60 hectares using the Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) approach, emphasising stakeholders' involvement, site and species selection and economic returns for locals through mangrove products. Additionally, a mangrove museum and learning centre will be established to promote mangrove biodiversity and cultural education. The initiative also aims to protect the embankment and enhance biodiversity and generate blue carbon benefits by restoring degraded coastal ecosystems. Overall BEDS seeks to foster coastal resilience through community mangrove rehabilitation.
