Project Story

BioBonds exists to restore the living ecosystems of Aotearoa through large scale native forest regeneration, biodiversity restoration, erosion control, carbon sequestration, and community led environmental stewardship.

Less than 30% of New Zealand's original native forests remain. Decades of deforestation, intensive agriculture, erosion, sediment runoff, and habitat loss have significantly impacted the health of our whenua, waterways, and native species.

BioBonds provides a practical and scalable solution.

By transforming highly erodible and degraded land into thriving native ecosystems, BioBonds creates long term environmental, social, cultural, and economic benefits that support both present and future generations.

Funding supports the planting and protection of native forests, ecological restoration projects, biodiversity recovery, local employment opportunities, and partnerships with iwi, nurseries, environmental organisations, and community groups across Aotearoa.

Our mission is to regenerate New Zealand's native landscapes through large scale reforestation projects that restore ecological balance, improve water quality, strengthen biodiversity, capture atmospheric carbon, and reconnect communities with nature.

We believe forests are more than collections of trees.

They are living systems that protect rivers, stabilise land, support wildlife, cool the climate, and provide a foundation for future generations to thrive.

Through BioBonds, individuals, businesses, philanthropists, and organisations can directly participate in restoring the ecological future of Aotearoa.

Background & Problem Statement

Before human settlement, approximately 80% of Aotearoa was covered in native forest.

Today, less than 28% remains.

The conversion of native ecosystems into farmland, commercial forestry, and urban development has resulted in:

• Severe soil erosion

• Sediment runoff into rivers and coastal environments

• Loss of native biodiversity

• Declining water quality

• Reduced climate resilience

• Habitat destruction for endemic species

Many steep and marginal farming areas are no longer economically productive while simultaneously contributing to environmental degradation.

Without intervention, these landscapes will continue to erode, impacting ecosystems, communities, and future generations.

BioBonds restores degraded landscapes by planting diverse indigenous forests specifically selected for long term ecological resilience.

Through strategic partnerships with local nurseries, ecological specialists, planting crews, councils, and iwi, BioBonds transforms vulnerable land into thriving native ecosystems.

Our Experience

BioBonds was founded by a team deeply connected to the land, ecological restoration, and regenerative development.

Co-founder Paul van Dorp has successfully overseen the restoration of large scale erosion prone landscapes including Tāmata Hills, where hundreds of thousands of native trees have been planted to transform degraded land into thriving forest ecosystems.

The organisation works alongside experienced restoration partners, indigenous planting teams, native nurseries, environmental specialists, local councils, and community stakeholders to ensure projects achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes.

Together, BioBonds is building a model for ecological restoration that combines environmental science, local knowledge, community engagement, and long term stewardship.
