Saving Sumatran Elephants and Communities in Leuser Ecosystem

Leuser Ecosystem Conservation Foundation

Nonprofit

Yayasan Konservasi Ekosistem Leuser (KEL) is a community-based environmental organization dedicated to protecting the Leuser Ecosystem in Aceh and North Sumatra, Indonesia. Founded by local environmental leaders and conservation practitioners, KEL focuses on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable agroforestry, and community empowerment. Our team works closely with forest-edge communities to address critical environmental challenges such as deforestation, habitat degradation, and human-wildlife conflict. We believe that long-term conservation can only succeed when local people become active partners in protecting their natural resources. KEL combines local knowledge, environmental education, and sustainable livelihood approaches to create practical, community-driven conservation solutions. Through collaboration with communities, government agencies, universities, and environmental partners, we aim to strengthen ecosystem resilience while improving the well-being

Project story

Saving the Leuser Ecosystem

The Leuser Ecosystem stands as one of Earth's last pristine tropical forests—a sanctuary for critically endangered Sumatran elephants, orangutans, and tigers. Yet this irreplaceable wilderness faces relentless threats: deforestation, land conversion, and escalating human-wildlife conflict that endanger both biodiversity and local communities.

Yayasan Konservasi Ekosistem Leuser (KEL) was born from a powerful conviction: conservation succeeds when communities lead it. We partner directly with forest-edge villages across Aceh and North Sumatra, restoring degraded landscapes, advancing sustainable agroforestry, and building environmental stewardship. By addressing the root causes of human-wildlife conflict, we're transforming how people and nature coexist.

Our Vision: Communities and ecosystems thriving side by side.

Your support fuels our expansion enabling more land restoration, strengthening livelihoods, and empowering local guardians to protect these critical forests. Together, we're securing a thriving future for both people and wildlife.
