Regenerating Together: Building a Better Future

This year’s project that we are asking your support for, is to create a new wetland at Mangarara.

You might ask why a wetland is important? Let me explain!

Wetlands are often called the kidneys of the landscape—and for good reason. Just as our kidneys filter impurities from our bodies, wetlands naturally filter sediment, nutrients and pollutants from water before they reach our rivers, estuaries and the sea. Here in Hawke's Bay, healthy wetlands play a vital role in trapping nitrogen and phosphorus, reducing flooding by soaking up heavy rainfall like a giant sponge, and slowly releasing clean water back into our waterways during drier months.

They're also some of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Wetlands provide essential habitat for native fish, birds, insects and plants, many of which are found nowhere else. Every wetland restored is a step towards healthier rivers, more abundant wildlife and a more resilient landscape for future generations. By protecting and restoring wetlands, we're not just caring for nature—we're investing in cleaner water, richer biodiversity and a healthier Hawke's Bay for everyone.

So wetlands are at the heart of a healthy ecosystem and with your support, we are trying to create an island of coherence in a world that is heading in the opposite direction.
