Planting Futures since 1998, in the aftermath of the civil unrest following the Rodney King verdict, LACGC now supports 40+ community gardens serving more than 2,000 households with access to land, fresh food, green space, and community connection. At each garden, neighbors care for shared land in ways that are both practical and deeply human. They grow vegetables, tend fruit trees, compost organic matter, repair irrigation lines, conserve water, welcome new members, and pass along knowledge across cultures and generations. By investing in community gardens, LACGC advances food access, climate adaptation, civic participation, and neighborhood belonging—placing resources closer to the people and places growing a more just and sustainable Los Angeles. We bring nature and neighbors togethers.

Imagine garden leaders who feel confident, connected, and equipped to nurture both soil and community. That's the vision driving Shared Land, Shared Leadership.
Across LACGC's network of 40+ gardens and 2,000 members, thriving communities begin with empowered leaders. When garden leaders master practical skills—cultivating hospitality, coordinating volunteers, navigating conflicts, and establishing shared agreements—transformation happens. Gardens flourish. Soil thrives. Water gets used wisely. Harvests multiply.
At each garden, neighbors care for shared land in ways that are both practical and deeply human. They grow vegetables, tend fruit trees, compost organic matter, repair irrigation lines, conserve water, welcome new members, and pass along knowledge across cultures and generations. These gardens are living examples of how urban land can become more productive, more resilient, and more connected when local people have the tools and trust to steward it together.
Over the next 12 months, LACGC will co-design and pilot a groundbreaking program featuring:
Practical leadership modules addressing real garden challenges
Peer learning circles connecting leaders across our entire network
Multilingual tools ensuring accessibility for our vibrant Spanish-speaking community
By investing in leadership, we're investing in healthier, more productive, and more resilient shared spaces. When people feel empowered to lead, the land—and the community—truly thrives.
