Community Bamboo growing: For flood control in Rwenzori, Uganda

CODPEO (Conserve 2 Develop Earth Organization) works to achieve gender equality and empower women, girls, and sex workers in low-income communities in Kasese through vocational training in hands-on skills like weaving, recycled tire craftware, and soap making while conserving the environment. Through vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and access to savings and loans, women gain financial independence and dignity. The organization promotes reusable woven carry-ons to limit plastic use and plants bamboo to prevent riverbank erosion.

Project story

The project is focusing on growing bamboo trees a alongside the river Banks of the most flooding Rivers in Rwenzori region to avoid the eroding of crops, house and other properties in the neighbouring communities and engage the communities on hilly and other near by other rivers adapt the best way of controlling flooding, soil erosion, several nursery beds of bamboo trees that is the yellow and green stems species will be grown as they are adaptive to the whether and climate conditions in the lee ward ward side of mount Rwenzori, after the beds have been established, the community sensitization will follow up on how to plant bamboo trees along side the banks of rivers Nyamwamba, Nyamugasana, Lubiriha, Mubuku and Nduguluha this will be voluntary done to demonstrate on how bamboo protect the flooding control silting, soil erosion alongside river Banks and later the community will adopt this method to their gardens and others near by small rivers.
