West Kootenay Watershed Collaborative is a collaborative network that seeks to build a resilient and thriving West Kootenay region where communities are empowered to protect and restore their watersheds, ensuring sustainable water resources for future generations. The organization brings together stakeholders to work on watershed conservation, environmental education, and community engagement around water protection and land restoration in the region.

Project story

Protecting Our Water, Securing Our Future

The West Kootenay Watershed Collaborative and the University of British Columbia are partnering to answer a critical question: how do forests and freshwater systems adapt as our climate changes?

We're conducting groundbreaking hydrological research to help communities understand what water futures hold. By evaluating different forest management approaches, we're providing the knowledge people need to make informed decisions today.

This isn't just academic work—it's community-driven. We engage everyone invested in freshwater: residents who depend on clean drinking water, First Nations, local governments, students, and youth.

Our impact extends beyond research. Every two to three months, we host public workshops sharing cutting-edge discoveries about wildfire management, hydrological findings, and ecologically sound forest stewardship. In just two years, we've equipped over 1,100 community members with practical, problem-solving information.

Together, we're building resilience. By combining science with community wisdom, we're creating pathways toward a sustainable, water-secure future.
