Nairobi Textile Recovery: Turning Waste into Livelihoods

Kenya
Education, Community, Restoration
UN
Unkara Group Foundation
District of Columbia, United States
Nonprofit

Unkara Group Foundation is a nonprofit organization building practical solutions at the intersection of textile waste, circular economy development, education, and economic empowerment. Founded in Nairobi in 2022, Unkara was created in response to the growing environmental and social impact of global fashion waste in developing countries. Across many African communities, discarded secondhand clothing and textile waste overwhelm local systems, damage ecosystems, weaken domestic manufacturing, and limit long-term economic opportunity. Unkara exists to help build a different model.

Project story

Every year, millions of discarded garments from the Global North accumulate across East Africa, contaminating soil, clogging waterways, and degrading local ecosystems. Unkara works with women and youth in Kenya to transform discarded textiles into community assets, supporting regenerative livelihoods, reducing pressure on land and ecosystems, and rebuilding local systems of production, stewardship, and resilience.
