AMUCSS (Asociación Mexicana de Uniones de Crédito del Sector Social) is a Mexican non-profit organization founded in 1992 with a single mission: to build community-owned financial institutions that last 100 years in the most marginalized rural regions of Mexico. Over 34 years, AMUCSS has grown into a network of 20 SOFINCOs —community microbanks owned and governed by their members— with 86,952 direct members across 67 branches, 65% women and 30% indigenous peoples from Nahua, Totonac, Mixtec, Zapotec and other communities. Through savings, credit and collective investment, AMUCSS finances agricultural cycles, preserves artisanal traditions and connects rural economies to the broader financial system without erasing their cultural identity. The Reserva Biocultural Ixpila is the natural next step of this work: from financial autonomy to collective stewardship of the land its members inhabit and depend on.
