Youth Hub Christchurch provides everything young people need to improve and maintain their mental health, from supported housing and health and support services, to recreation and creativity. Stage One opened in late 2024 and includes a supported housing wing for youth at risk of homelessness, a wrap-around youth services building with a wide range of youth-focused organisations onsite to help young people receive the help and support they need in one central location, an outdoor activities courtyard and an Events Centre. We continue to fundraise to build another wing of supported housing and communal spaces including a training cafe, creative arts space, garden areas and hangout spaces where young people can connect and belong.
Project story
We are seeking to establish a rooftop beekeeping initiative at Youth Hub Christchurch, strengthening community connection while creating a sustainable revenue stream. Delivered in partnership with Clever Little Bees, the project will activate a portion of the Hub’s roof with two managed beehives, alongside permanent decking and planter boxes growing bee-friendly plants such as clover.
The space will provide a safe, shared environment where young people – particularly those living in our supported housing who have experienced homelessness or instability – can come together, learn and participate. Through guided hive visits and hands-on involvement, participants will develop knowledge of beekeeping, pollination and food systems, while building confidence, responsibility and social connection.
All honey produced will belong to the Youth Hub and can be sold as a fundraising product, supporting the ongoing sustainability of services and creating a small-scale social enterprise opportunity.
Funding will cover hive establishment and management, rooftop decking and planter installation and essential safety equipment including an epipen and gumboots. This initiative is designed as a long-term, community-building programme that fosters connection, resilience, environmental awareness and positive outcomes for young people.
