SUGi: Greening Cities & Reimagining Urban Life

SUGi is a global living network creating biodiverse SUGi Pocket Forests in the cities and communities most affected by climate change. Based on the proven Miyawaki Method, each ultra-dense, native-species forest is co-designed, planted, and stewarded by a SUGi Forest Maker rooted in their own community. Across 28 countries, 65 cities, and almost 270 SUGi Pocket Forests, we work with schools, councils, Tribal Nations, and grassroots organisations to restore biodiversity, cool urban heat, and reconnect people with nature.

This project was selected as a RestorLife Awards finalist

Project story

SUGi began as a grassroots movement in 2019 and has grown into a global living network: 265 SUGi Pocket Forests across 65 cities and 28 countries. Together with our global community of expert SUGi Forest Makers, schools, councils, Tribal Nations, and grassroots organisations, we have planted nearly 480,000 native trees with 86% survival.

Based on the proven Miyawaki Method, each SUGi Pocket Forest can be grown on a plot the size of a parking space. It cools and cleans the air, brings birds and pollinators back within months, boosts human health, and turns concrete into wild, layered ecosystems.

Behind every forest is a story that moves people. We grew a community of 130,000 active users across our social platforms carrying SUGi's voice with hope and joy, and drawing more communities into the work.

Over the next 12 months, this funding will amplify that mission, deepening SUGi's community engagement programme: SUGi Walks, SUGi Talks, and stewardship events that protect newly planted forests. SUGi Walks in London alone has welcomed more than 300 community members, eager to learn about the Miyawaki method and the benefits of urban biodiversity.

Every walk, every talk, every gathering brings more communities into the work of growing nature where it's needed most
