Kalpavaatika Society Nepal is an organization working to address urban sustainability challenges in Kathmandu through nature-based solutions. This all-women-led organization comprises a dedicated team of environmentalists and health sector educators. Their initiative focuses on providing kitchen waste composting and rooftop farming training to community members in Nagarjun Municipality, Kathmandu. In partnership with local government and UNDP's Youth4Climate team, the project distributes compost bins and grafted fruit plants to encourage urban households to reduce methane emissions and address waste management and food security issues.

Project story

From Waste to Green Corner

Nagarjun Municipality's faced two interconnected crises: excessive waste management costs creating community friction, and rising urbanization shrinking green spaces and intensifying urban heat.

We tackled both through a circular economy approach. Our intensive training program reached 271 community members in kitchen waste composting and rooftop farming, while 242 students from five schools gained hands-on practical experience. We distributed 120 compost bins and 450 grafted fruit plants to participants.

The results speak for themselves. With 80% of rooftops previously unused, this initiative unlocked their potential for both climate adaptation and food production increasing urban green space. Today, these spaces are greener, cooler, and productive.

The impact is measurable:

  • 1,141.2 kg of kitchen organic waste diverted from landfills monthly

  • Nearly 1.07 tons of greenhouse gas emissions (methane and CO2) eliminated monthly

  • Growing community participation in organic vegetable production

What began as a waste management solution evolved into a thriving green initiative that reduces costs, combats urban heat, and empowers residents to grow their own food. Together, we're building a more sustainable, resilient community.
