DR
Dryland Solutions
Somalia
Nonprofit

Dryland Solutions is dedicated to rejuvenating the semi-desert grassland ecosystem in Somalia by 2030 through sustainable land management and nature-based solutions. Operating in the Nugaal Valley region of Somalia where decades of deforestation, overgrazing, and drought have degraded the landscape, the organization promotes ecological restoration through agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, permaculture, and sustainable land management to improve resilience and livelihoods while addressing climate change. Dryland Solutions restores ecosystems, improves livelihoods, empowers future leaders, and accelerates nature-based solutions to enhance environmental health, economic opportunity, social resilience, and educational access.

RE
Regenerosity
California, United States
Nonprofit

Regenerosity supports and catalyzes grassroots organizations and leaders globally to protect, restore, and regenerate their communities and ecosystems. The organization flows trust-based funds to high-potential, community-based initiatives in threatened or degraded landscapes in ways that grow their capacities, scale and impact. Through its Blossom Program, a two-year capacity strengthening initiative, Regenerosity resources local grassroots organizations to strengthen their capacity and leadership skills while prototyping new models for regional growth. The work prioritizes transformation of food systems and livelihoods through agroecology and regenerative practices led by local communities informed by traditional ecological knowledge.

Project story

Dryland Solutions, Somalia

Restoring Life to the Drylands

For decades, the Nugaal Valley has suffered devastating cycles of drought, overgrazing, and conflict. Once-fertile lands have turned to dust, crops fail, and families struggle with food insecurity and forced migration. But recovery is possible.

Dryland Solutions is transforming this narrative. Working directly with local communities, we're restoring degraded drylands through rainwater harvesting, native vegetation, and food forests while training farmers in regenerative practices. Women and youth collaborate on land-use decisions, ensuring solutions reflect community wisdom and create meaningful employment.

Our ambitious vision: restore 2 hectares initially, then scale to 187 hectares by 2028—benefiting over 100 households.

The Impact

Beyond environmental restoration, this is about rebuilding dignity and resilience. Improved soil health will recharge groundwater, enable reliable food production, and strengthen livelihoods. Our site will become a demonstration center and educational hub, inspiring dryland regeneration across Somaliland and the Horn of Africa.

This is community-led restoration. This is hope taking root.
