Communities in the Pacific Islands depend on coral reefs and land resources for their food and livelihoods. However, coral reefs are in free fall collapse in the face of warming seas from climate change. We work with communities and resorts to rescue corals from shallow, hot waters where temperatures can reach 35C in the summer, but where temperatures are now becoming lethal during marine heat waves. Planted onto raised nurseries located in cooler waters nearby, the corals escape both the heat and the over-abundant coral killing COTS. Widely spaced and rare corals are brought close together and coral reproduction is restored. The heat adapted corals grow and are trimmed to create regeneration patches modelled on forest restoration. University graduates are also trained for coral work in participating resorts. Communities are establishing no-fishing Tabu areas and as they sacrifice large fishing areas for conservation, we reward them by training them in forest permaculture, free range village chickens, and post harvest processing of forest products, such as chocolate making.
