Project story

Reforestando(Nos): Protecting Puerto Rico's Communities

Puerto Rican coastal communities face an urgent environmental crisis. Rising sea levels threaten homes, while the loss of dunes and coral reefs—natural barriers against storms—accelerates erosion. These vulnerable communities, predominantly composed of low-income families, women-headed households, and elderly residents, risk losing everything.

Our Solution: Community-Led Reforestation

Reforestando(Nos) tackles this challenge through authentic community partnership. We don't impose solutions; we collaborate. Local residents are involved from the initial vision through implementation and long-term management, ensuring projects thrive for years to come.

Our proven approach uses popular education strategies to build capacity within communities while restoring natural ecosystems. This has consistently led to stronger, more sustainable outcomes that improve both environmental and social conditions.

Making It Happen

To launch this initiative, we're establishing community nurseries across Puerto Rico. With your support, we'll equip these spaces with essential tools and resources to train and employ over 1,000 community members. Working alongside trusted local partners, we'll identify abandoned spaces for rehabilitation and transformation into thriving nurseries that serve as hubs for economic opportunity and environmental restoration.

Together, we can protect these communities and build a more resilient future.
