MAGNUS LUCUS project was born with the aim to foster sustainability at all levels: 1) to recover the regional ecosystems and reverse desertification by prioritizing water management, reforestation with endemic species, water resources management, soil enrichment, caring for biodiversity and animal species at risk or vulnerable, and soil improvement (environmental) 2) to spread new regenerative agricultural models (social) 3) to strengthen the economic and social context of rural areas and empower local communities to improve their livelihoods and bring about bottom-up and long-lasting change and well-being (economical).
Project story
Since 2019, our gorup has been pioneering a community-led approach to ecosystem restoration in Southern Italy, building successful demonstration sites, bringing back biodiversity, and improving water management. We purchased 12 hectares of land and managed more then 15 hectares more. Up to the present, all results (20,000 native and fruit trees planted, 2,000 trees donated, 5 lake restored, 9 hectares restored, 6 sites under restoration, 10 courses, about 60 planting events) have been achieved on a voluntary basis, with the help of strong community support. Over the next 10 years, the newly formed team will operate directly in the field, which interfaces with Plant for the Planet Italia ODV for the coordination and management of economic resources in the national territory and ERC as an international partner, will find itself in a unique position to start the restoration of large areas that from Basilicata also reach nearby Puglia. This pioneering initiative already has the potential to expand its restoration efforts to several dozen hectares, with interest expressed by numerous landowners ready to become part of the project and begin ecological restoration on their own lands too. The existing collaboration with strong international organizations such as Ecosystem Restoration Camps, Plant for the Planet ITALIA ODV will allow MAGNUS LUCUS to strengthen and expand its network of stakeholders to achieve the restoration of vast territories in Basilicata and Puglia.
