Compostonautas: Turning Waste into Wonder
From WhatsApp Group to Environmental Movement
What started as a simple WhatsApp conversation in 2016 has blossomed into a thriving environmental initiative transforming how Nova Friburgo tackles organic waste. Compostonautas emerged from environmentalist Ramon Porto's vision: make composting accessible, fun, and contagious.
The project's genius lies in its playful approach. Participants become "compostonautas" - adventurers embarking on a sustainable mission - who build their own "compostships" (home composting units). This space-themed language captivates young people while making composting feel like an exciting journey rather than a chore.
Real Impact, Tangible Results
Since its official launch in 2018, Compostonautas has distributed composting units to families, established thriving school gardens, and inspired dozens of spin-off initiatives across the region. Their 2022 partnership created a demonstration composting yard and organic garden at a local school, benefiting 200+ students who now understand waste as a resource.
The numbers speak: each home composter diverts approximately 1 kg of organic waste daily from landfills, preventing methane emissions while generating nutrient-rich fertilizer. Multiply that across dozens of units, and the environmental footprint shrinks significantly.
With 3,000+ Instagram followers and features in regional media, Compostonautas proves that sustainable living isn't complicated - it just needs creativity, community, and a dash of cosmic inspiration.
