Our team—students from Häme University of Applied Sciences (Finland) and Bugema University (Uganda)—partnered with AFRICE, a non-profit, to create a project proposal. Its mission? To connect academic agricultural development with indigenous farming wisdom.
It started when Finnish students visited the Bagungu people in Buliisa District, Uganda. We met seed custodian women, clan leader, sacred site custodians and farmers, learning about revitalising their culture and traditional farming and land-restoration techniques.
Back at Bugema University, we shared these insights with Ugandan peers. Soon after, AFRICE—the organization behind the visit—contacted us. The Bagungu community appreciated our respect and sincere interest in their knowledge.
This sparked regular discussion and Helena, Satu, Joseph, and Dennis to explore ways to involve more students in learning indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).
