Earth Guardians Sierra Leone is a country branch of the parent Earth Guardians global network, located in 47 countries across the globe. Earth Guardians Sierra Leone is a legally registered community-based organization (CBO). EG-SL operates under a locally governed structure that combines strategic oversight with a lean administrative and technical team to ensure effective program delivery and accountability. At the governance level, the organization is guided by a local board of directors, which provides strategic direction, policy guidance, and oversight of management and financial accountability. The operational structure is led by a project director, who is responsible for overall leadership.
Project story
Bonthe Island Sea-Face Mangrove Restoration Project
Mangroves are nature's guardians. Along Bonthe Island's coastline, these remarkable trees have protected communities for generations—filtering water, sheltering marine life, and standing firm against storms and erosion.
Today, that protection is disappearing. Widespread destruction of the mangrove ecosystems has left thousands of residents vulnerable to flooding, particularly those living near the waterfront. The consequences are severe: homes submerged during high tides, livelihoods threatened, and biodiversity in decline.
But change is possible. This community-led initiative aims to restore the fragile mangrove forests of the Sherbro River Estuary. By replanting and protecting these vital ecosystems, we can:
Rebuild natural storm barriers against flooding and erosion
Revive local fisheries that depend on healthy mangrove habitats
Combat climate change through enhanced carbon storage
Safeguard biodiversity for future generations
With your support, we can bring these green guardians back to Bonthe Island and secure a safer, more prosperous future for its people.
