Project story

Bonthe Island Sea-Face Mangrove Restoration Project

Mangroves are nature's guardians. Along Bonthe Island's coastline, these remarkable trees have protected communities for generations—filtering water, sheltering marine life, and standing firm against storms and erosion.

Today, that protection is disappearing. Widespread destruction of the mangrove ecosystems has left thousands of residents vulnerable to flooding, particularly those living near the waterfront. The consequences are severe: homes submerged during high tides, livelihoods threatened, and biodiversity in decline.

But change is possible. This community-led initiative aims to restore the fragile mangrove forests of the Sherbro River Estuary. By replanting and protecting these vital ecosystems, we can:

  • Rebuild natural storm barriers against flooding and erosion

  • Revive local fisheries that depend on healthy mangrove habitats

  • Combat climate change through enhanced carbon storage

  • Safeguard biodiversity for future generations

With your support, we can bring these green guardians back to Bonthe Island and secure a safer, more prosperous future for its people.
