Kuthumba Ecovillage
South Africa
NonprofitAbout
Kuthumba Ecovillage is a 160-hectare protected nature reserve and intentional community nestled in the indigenous afromontane forest of The Crags, Plettenberg Bay, on South Africa's Garden Route. Founded over 30 years ago by Ruby Overstone, it is home to approximately 50 permanent residents across 32 properties all committed to living in genuine harmony with the land.
Kuthumba is governed by a non-profit Home Owners Association, and residents are currently in the process of formally declaring 70 hectares of the land a protected nature reserve, ensuring it can never be developed, mined, or destroyed.
The ecovillage's mission is to honour the interrelationship of all life, develop sustainable systems, and foster environmental wisdom, serving as a model for low-impact living and ecological stewardship.
