Reforesting Sicily and Bioregional Economy Network Technology
Rifai Sicilia is a bioregional cultural association focused on regenerating the commons through reforestation, landscape rehydration, and wildfire prevention. We have woven a community of on the ground projects throughout Sicily, offering training in web3 tools while bootstrapping a regional onchain economy backed by a healthy ecology and rooted in territorial trust networks.
Project story
About Us
Rifai Sicilia is a cultural association that regenerates the Sicilian ecology by supporting and developing the bioregional economy. We unite the regional projects and initiatives in the territory using culture and technology as tools for transformation and revaluation.
Through the re-bioregioning process we can reforest and rehydrate the landscape and restore all 8 forms of capital. We have a 2 hectare syntropic agroforestry demonstration site that we have been stewarding since 2023, and recently purchased a 1 acre forest for preservation and as a community training center for reforestation and wildfire training in Trapani province. We work with partner organizations around the island and are setting up another bioregional hub in Ragusa province.
Our Activities
We focus on syntropic agroforestry, permaculture education and training, reforestation, rainwater retention, wildfire prevention, trash cleanup, river health monitoring, seed saving, cultural heritage preservation, agrotourism, holistic grazing, local farmers markets, mutual credit commitment pooling, Web3 education and onboarding.
Our Funding Needs
Our biggest need for future funding is continued education in permaculture, syntropic agroforestry, and holistic grazing. Future funding will go to buying tree stock especially for certified cultivars of fruit and nut trees. We also need to invest in a commons tool library such as an excavator, chipper-mulcher, and tractor as these are some of the biggest costs for farms looking to make the regenerative transition.
Impact Partners
We use Silvi App to measure and monitor our tree planting and growth across our member agroforestry and permaculture sites. We are also are using Mego Tickets to track participation in our mutual aid and education events. We are writing impact reports on Bloom Network that links to Karma Gap.
With our upcoming soil science workshop we can also start tracking soil quality health on our partner sites. We have also begun a collaboration with Atlantis App to do river quality monitoring.
