Voedselpark Amsterdam is a citizen-led initiative creating one of Europe’s largest urban agricultural parks in the Lutkemeerpolder, the last fertile farmland within Amsterdam. Located in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, one of the city’s most economically disadvantaged areas, it is also situated in one of the Netherlands’ longest-running environmental protest sites. Emerging from a grassroots movement that resisted the construction of large-scale warehouses, the initiative has secured 9 hectares of land in hereditary lease. Together with local farmers, volunteers, and residents, Voedselpark is building a commons-based food system that combines regenerative agriculture, ecological restoration, education, and community stewardship, demonstrating how land can be cared for and governed as a shared resource.
Project story
Voedselpark Amsterdam: Reclaiming Food, Land, and Community
In Amsterdam's last fertile farmland lies an ambitious vision: a thriving food commons born from years of environmental activism. Voedselpark Amsterdam has secured 9.5 hectares in the Lutkemeerpolder—land that could have been lost to development—and is now transforming it into something extraordinary.
We're building more than a farm. Our food park will regenerate soil, restore biodiversity, and strengthen local food security while creating a vibrant hub where thousands can learn, grow, and reconnect with each other and the land.
Right now, we're developing infrastructure, establishing community governance, and supporting diverse agroecological growers and social initiatives. Funds will support land preparation, water systems, community facilities, ecological restoration, and expert guidance.
The Challenge: Creating a commons requires significant upfront investment before any revenue flows in. The social and ecological returns are immeasurable—but the initial costs are real.
The Opportunity: You can help build a long-term community asset that will nourish Amsterdam for generations. Every contribution brings us closer to a model proving that food, land, and community can be organized differently.
Together, we're transforming protected farmland into a thriving commons for all.
