The Youth for Environmental Conservation Initiative (YECI) is a youth-led organization addressing environmental degradation in underserved African communities through science, local knowledge, and environmental education. We work directly with youth and their communities to promote intergenerational collaboration and support sustainable initiatives that advance biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
Project story
Nigeria faces worsening environmental crises, such as water scarcity, plastic pollution and soil degradation; yet climate education is largely theoretical. Students lack hands-on learning, leaving them disconnected from real-world challenges. In the last two years, we have engaged 34 basic schools, proving that practical climate education empowers youth to act. This project scales up that success, embedding experiential learning in schools to equip students with skills for sustainability and resilience.
The Pledge for Nature project transforms schools in Lagos, Nigeria, into sustainability hubs where students learn permaculture and land conservation practices through experiential training workshops, including activities such as rainwater harvesting, composting, and renewable energy solutions. By integrating citizen science and STEM-based learning, students and teachers will develop skills to track environmental data and create solutions. This hands-on approach fosters ecopreneurs and critical thinkers, equipping young people to drive sustainable change within their communities and beyond, and to strengthen policy implementation through environmental education.
