Forest stewardship and livelihoods in central Mexico
Reforestamos Mexico is an NGO established in 2002 whose mission is to safeguard the forests and jungles that Mexico needs for its sustainable development. The organization aligns actions from forest communities, the private sector, government and other NGOs to promote competitive forest management and responsible entrepreneurship, while encouraging responsible innovation to stop deforestation and promote restoration of degraded lands. Reforestamos works across 11 states of Mexico through more than 10 initiatives including Community Enterprise Development, Better Alliances for Better Forests, Young Forest Entrepreneurs, and Productive Landscape Restoration.
Project story
Reforestamos México was founded to protect and restore Mexico’s forest landscapes by strengthening the communities that depend on them. The organization believes healthy forests are essential for biodiversity, climate resilience, water security, and sustainable livelihoods. It works with local communities, ejidos, Indigenous peoples, civil society, and private-sector partners to develop long-term solutions for conservation and restoration.
Mexico faces major environmental challenges, including deforestation, illegal logging, land-use change, wildfires, and climate change. These threats reduce biodiversity, weaken water systems, diminish carbon storage, and affect rural livelihoods.
Reforestamos México addresses these challenges through a community-led approach that recognizes local and Indigenous communities as key forest stewards. The organization strengthens local governance, promotes sustainable forest economies, restores degraded landscapes, and supports initiatives such as sustainable forestry and ecosystem restoration.
Its model combines environmental restoration, social inclusion, economic resilience, and multi-sector collaboration to create scalable and lasting impact for both forests and communities.
