Permaculture Champions is a grassroots ecological organisation dedicated to restoring degraded landscapes and building food-secure communities. We empower individuals to transform backyards, farms, and public spaces into self-sustaining ecosystems using the principles of permaculture design. By providing accessible education, regional seed networks, and technical site design, we bridge the gap between ecological anxiety and climate action. Our mission is to decentralize food production and water security. We do this by turning everyday citizens into active environmental stewards. Your funding directly drives our localised community workshops, physical tool-sharing libraries, and micro-grants for urban food forests.
I am Sumaidi Angale, the founder of Permaculture Champions and Hope Studio in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. As a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, I have experienced the challenges of food insecurity, unemployment, environmental degradation, and limited opportunities for young people. Instead of waiting for change, I decided to become part of the solution.
Through our project, we teach practical permaculture, climate-smart agriculture, and environmental conservation while empowering young people and women with hands-on skills that can improve their livelihoods. We have already established a home demonstration garden where we grow vegetables, bananas, papaya, sugarcane, and other crops. This garden has become a learning space that inspires families to produce their own food despite the harsh climate of Kakuma.
Our dream is to expand this work into a larger community learning center where more refugees and members of the host community can learn sustainable farming, tree planting, water conservation, and practical skills that create income while protecting the environment. We believe that restoring the land also restores hope, dignity, and opportunity.
The funds from MyEarth will help us purchase quality seeds and seedlings, farming tools, irrigation equipment, composting materials, tree seedlings, and training resources. They will also support the expansion of our demonstration garden so that we can train more people and increase food production.
Our biggest challenges are the dry climate, limited access to farming resources, and lack of financial support. Despite these obstacles, we continue working with determination because we believe every tree planted, every garden created, and every person trained brings us closer to a greener and more self-reliant future.
By supporting our project, you are investing in people who are transforming a refugee camp into a place of learning, environmental restoration, and hope for future generations.
