Environmental and Green Initiative for Sustainability (EGIS) is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing climate justice, protecting ecosystems, and empowering communities across Nigeria.

Project story

The Ogun River is a lifeline for South West Nigeria, but its waters flowing through Abeokuta, Ogun State's capital, are choking under mountains of non-biodegradable waste. This pollution crisis threatens aquatic ecosystems and poses serious health risks to the thousands of communities that depend on the river.

The problem didn't happen overnight. Years of indiscriminate dumping have transformed a vital water source into an environmental disaster. Fish populations are declining, water quality is deteriorating, and families living nearby face contamination in their drinking water.

But change is possible. We're launching a comprehensive cleanup and waste management initiative to restore the Ogun River. Our project combines immediate cleanup efforts with long-term solutions: community education programs, waste collection systems, and partnerships with local stakeholders.

By supporting this campaign, you're not just cleaning a river—you're protecting the health of thousands, preserving biodiversity, and creating a sustainable future for South West Nigeria. Together, we can transform the Ogun River from a dumping ground back into the clean, thriving waterway it was meant to be.
