Project Story

Tanzania Sustainable Nature Organization (TASUNA) is a non-governmental organization working with coastal communities in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, to restore fragile coastal ecosystems and strengthen community resilience. Along Bagamoyo’s coastline, mangrove destruction, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change are threatening marine ecosystems and local livelihoods. Mangroves are critical for protecting shorelines, storing carbon, and providing breeding grounds for fish and marine species. However, unsustainable resource use and limited environmental awareness continue to degrade these ecosystems. Coastal restoration is increasingly recognized as essential for climate resilience and biodiversity conservation in Tanzania.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower young people and coastal communities to protect and restore nature through environmental education, mangrove restoration, waste management, and community-led conservation initiatives. We believe lasting conservation happens when local communities are directly involved in creating solutions that improve both ecosystems and livelihoods.

Background & Problem Statement

Bagamoyo’s coastal communities are increasingly affected by shoreline erosion, declining fish catches, flooding, and loss of biodiversity due to mangrove destruction and pollution. Many families depend directly on marine resources for survival, yet environmental degradation continues because of poverty, population pressure, and limited conservation awareness. Youth often lack opportunities to participate in environmental leadership and climate action.

Solution

TASUNA organizes mangrove planting campaigns, beach clean-ups, environmental education programs, and youth conservation initiatives. To date, we have planted over 15,000 mangrove seedlings and supported the restoration and protection of approximately 12 hectares of coastal habitat through community participation and awareness campaigns. Our approach combines ecosystem restoration with youth empowerment and community stewardship.

Opportunity

This project creates opportunities for climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and sustainable livelihoods in coastal communities. By restoring mangroves and engaging youth, we are helping communities adapt to climate change while protecting natural resources for future generations. The project also creates opportunities for community learning, eco-tourism awareness, and local environmental leadership.

How We Regenerate

We use a community-led restoration approach that combines mangrove planting, environmental education, coastal clean-ups, and local participation. We work closely with schools, youth groups, fishers, women’s groups, and local leaders to strengthen long-term stewardship of coastal ecosystems. We also promote waste reduction, climate awareness, and sustainable environmental practices.

Tracking Impact

Our organization monitors the number of mangrove seedlings planted, restoration sites established, hectares restored, and the number of youth and community members engaged in conservation activities. We also collect community feedback and track improvements in environmental awareness, mangrove survival rates, and ecosystem recovery.

Our Experience

TASUNA is led by passionate young conservationists, volunteers, researchers, and community members committed to protecting Tanzania’s coastal ecosystems. Our team has organized community clean-ups, environmental campaigns, mangrove restoration activities, and youth conservation programs across Bagamoyo. Through partnerships with local stakeholders and community groups, we continue building practical, community-driven solutions for environmental restoration and climate resilience.
