About

Forests for Monarchs works with local communities in central Mexico to protect and restore forest ecosystems critical to the monarch butterfly migration. Since 1997, we have partnered with ejidos, indigenous communities, landowners, and conservation leaders in and around the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and the Highland Lakes Watershed region. Together, we restore degraded forest landscapes through community forestry, growing native trees in our nursery and planting them in priority areas affected by forest loss, erosion, and climate pressures. This work helps conserve essential monarch winter habitat while also supporting other migratory and endemic species, improving watershed health, and creating sustainable local livelihoods. The people behind Forests for Monarchs are community members, foresters, students, and conservation partners committed to caring for these forests and strengthening habitat for generations to come.
