Te Tauihu Environment Trust (TET) grew from a shared belief that communities play a vital role in caring for nature. What began as a practical response to local environmental needs has evolved into a community based collective supporting restoration efforts across Te Tauihu, the top of the South Island — connecting people, knowledge, and action to create lasting change. The Trust was established over 25 years ago, through a shared vision between the Nelson Marlborough Conservation Board, Federated Farmers, the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust, and Tasman District Council. TET has grown into a trusted partner supporting community-led restoration across Te Tauihu. Over time, our role has expanded to include project management, planning, fundraising, coordination, and practical support — helping local projects get started, grow sustainably, and achieve lasting outcomes for nature.

Project story

Te Tauihu Environment Trust

Te Tauihu Environment Trust (TET) is a conservation hub that empowers community groups to focus on what they do best—protecting our natural world. We handle the paperwork, so they don't have to.

From managing finances and navigating compliance to securing funding and strategic planning, TET removes the administrative burden that often distracts conservation volunteers from their mission. We act as the legal backbone for community groups, freeing them to dedicate energy to restoring local streams, protecting valleys, and caring for cherished coastlines.

Our strong networks—connecting funders, iwi, and government agencies—enable us to support both large-scale restoration projects and grassroots efforts across the Top of the South Island. As a critical component of the Kotahitanga mō te Taiao Alliance, TET helps scale conservation impact throughout the region while keeping individual projects in the driver's seat.

We believe great conservation work shouldn't be derailed by red tape. When communities are supported well, nature thrives.
